Fungus and Evolution

This planet had little to no life on it when the first humanoids arrived, who chose to live underground, because its easier to control things completely that way, but the fungus that they were using for their technology became sentient if it wasn't already, and it began facilitating the transfer of the life essences of culls to the surface of the planet.
