Gramps knows when Rosey is lying he just refuses to let her know what gives her away to him, therefore if she says something a certain number of times or in a certain way he says like "well I guess I have to take your word for it then".

No one who did these things or allowed them to happen did them with the intention of letting me overcome them later in life.
