Gramps feels that term just means hate or selfishness. He has never seen a real mother use that term or anyone who really cared about their child. Sometimes whores can forget that they adopted their children but when a "step father" starts making a point to point out all he could do for the whore if the kids weren't around "tough love" tends to be mentioned.
But its even weirder to hear complete strangers council "tough love" to actual family especially concerning a grandchild who has gotten things together after years of abuse that didn't end in childhood to keep the rent and bills paid and supper on the table even though the abuse still only takes brief breaks till someone thinks of something new to do.
No one ever talks about "tough love" when an administrator at a university is still bothering someone six years after graduation, when he had no real cause to bother that person even during their education. And when the whore is talking about throwing her kids out on the street, its rare when people mention the the whore is also lazy and not pulling her own weight.
