Barney wouldn't let go of not being a breeder but Dad's most salient skill to most people is that he can find the tiniest loophole or territorial non coverage for something forbidden to take place. However, these tiny holes tend to only exist in areas where people would think that its already been sealed out. Barney had forbidden Marie from sex in his ground rules for treating her different and had spelled out what would happen if she broke that rule, which she didn't do in that context, but she knew when she became pregnant, and did not know how it had happened or what to say about it and she knew Barney pretty well.
