The Slum Lord's name isn't Detsu, its Smegma, at least as far as most of you are concerned. So Smegma comes up with all kinds of things to tell you to do. Its not so simple as simply refusing as he knows many of you have done similar things for others and if you refuse him when it isn't your first time he becomes very offended and he doesn't take offense sitting down.
Many of us have gone through a freegan phase, when for some reason or another we knew that the only thing getting a job or putting our name on a lease would do would be to add another firing to our resume or an eviction to our rental history. Both Smegma and Detsu have a lot of respect for people with the sense to do that, to go to someone less fearsome to work out your immaturities on and then to approach him when you can be more serious and responsible. In many cultures people learn in school how to approach a person of higher dignity but in the US our education is consistently remiss in this area so it falls on me to try to explain this the best I can to you.
First of all don't imitate me or my behavior because the Slum Lord isn't your dad and he wont cut you the same slack. Even though he is my dad, I still didn't rent from him until I had my act together a lot more, and instead rented from others to see how they handled the kind of immaturity issues we often have to deal with in our own holdings. It was interesting to see the kinds of responses I got, from simple but slightly illegal refusal of renewal to fraudulent charges, incessant home invasion and what seemed to me a flagrant lack of understanding of real estate laws at every turn. But I figure they could act that way safely in most cases because the people they rent to don't know their rights and there isn't a lot of enforcement that cant be bought off, though once it has been a precident is a precedent and applies to all properties and owners, so what Renniassance got away with others can also pull, though I'd avoid falsifying charges.
Anyway, we stick to the law around here, and in any property owned by us we take "reasonable notice" and "just cause" very seriously. In other words, we aren't your room mate when you rent from us. As a result though, we aren't your arbitrator with the law either. We think you are up to bad business, we call the cops, and if the cops dont respond we refer the case to the bad business men who respect our property rights and other than that we don't regulate them.
When you are able to rent from us in your own name with your own proof of income you are regarded a lot differently than someone with a cosigner or an illegal sublettor (if we remand you to bad businessmen you will become an illegal sublettor and may be subject to eviction without warning for any infraction even off property). People who are able by any legal means to pay their own rent (including pensioners and welfare recipients) are considered masters, even if they are only masters of themselves. People who can't do this much must respect the masters, but the masters don't have to respect them. That means I can call you a whore, but you cant talk back to me. I can call you a whore even if you don't bug me, but me being me, I reward good slaves by ignoring them in most normal cases of nearby living circumstances.
When you are offered opportunities to aggravate your neighbors you have the opportunity to refuse. If you refuse because they are your buddy that might be the right answer or the wrong answer. Even if The Slum Lord in person tells you to bother me, you are to refuse because if you don't you will be penalized and whatever the Slum Lord is going to do to you for refusing him, if you refuse him to not bother me, and the reason is "because she is superior to me" or any variation of that excuse, he might even reward you after he punnishes you for refusing him, and if you dont refuse he will punnish you for accepting a reward plus for bothering a superior, and I will also punish you.
If you use the same excuse for someone else after not using that excuse for me, you are in worse trouble than I can describe.
Donny once explained to me that when everything is spelled out for a slave they dont develop "slavey sense" or the ability to sort of know when something is forbidden even without being told. Such slaves without this sense are less likely to survive as long or gain as much favor as slaves who have it. Though the process is rough you just have to go through it and Donny says some of the slave who have been punished the most have thanked her for doing them that way especially after seeing the fate of those she was nicer to, which was horrible, so I wont explain everything to you either.
The Slum Lord is not from this culture or this time. What he sees as useful and useless, work and not work and if work is good or bad is not like a puritan from the mayflower. He disdains people who work for work's sake, and most of the people who strive hardest and cause the most trouble work for work's sake. I think I would harm you to explain that further but it was important to warn you that this is a very big mistake that many slaves make.
